Basketball betting: points, lines and overtime
By Ilze Krūmiņa · updated October 2026
Basketball is high-scoring, so its markets look different from football or hockey. The most common bets are on the winner, the points total and the spread. Here is how they work and how they are settled.
Main markets
- Winner. Basketball has no final draw — the game goes to overtime — so the winner market usually includes overtime.
- Points total. Over or under a line, such as 168.5 points.
- Spread. For example −7.5 for the favourite: it must win by eight or more.
- Quarters and halves. Bets on one part of the game.
Overtime and totals
Many basketball markets include overtime, which can flip a totals bet. A game with 162 points in regulation might end with 176 after overtime, and an "under 168.5" bet loses. Before betting, check whether the line applies to regulation or the whole game.
| Situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| The game goes to overtime | Whether your market includes overtime |
| A whole-number line | Whether an exact landing returns the stake |
| A quarter bet | Whether overtime counts as part of the fourth quarter |
The spread in an example
The favourite is −7.5 at odds of 1.90, and you stake 20. It wins by 10 — you receive 38. It wins by 6 — the bet loses even though the team won. Spreads even out the odds but demand a more precise prediction.
Why lines are so sharp
Totals and spreads are set so both sides are roughly equally likely, with the bookmaker earning from the margin. That is why "obvious" bets are rarely obvious. If a line looks too generous, check injuries and line-ups — or simply skip it.
Live betting and pace
Scores move fast and live odds change by the minute. The pace encourages frequent bets. If you bet live, decide in advance how many bets you will place on a game and stick to it. Bonus terms for live bets may differ — see Bonus terms.
Keep a record
A simple table — date, match, market, odds, stake, result — shows after a month which markets you actually understand and where you are guessing. Memory keeps the good nights and forgets the bad ones; a table forgets nothing.
When money is available
Single-game bets settle soon after the final buzzer; accumulators after their last event. Money in open bets cannot be withdrawn. Withdrawals: Withdrawals. Other sports: ice hockey, football, tennis; bet types here.
